We had some fun along the drive though. At the AZ state line is a little string of Indian shops where tribe members sell jewelry, blankets, pottery and other trinkets they have made. It looked so cool from the road--it was at the foot of a cliff--that we had to stop. The kids-including Kevin-had fun climbing on the rocks at the base of the cliffs and browsing for souvenirs.
Our favorite part of the day was when we were almost to the campground and we took a wrong turn and ended up on a road that had free-range cattle (they were not fenced in and were standing right beside the road). You just don't see that every day so we had to pull over. The kids wanted to see if they could pet the cows, of course. A couple of them were just calves and they were cute if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, the cows did not want to be petted or cuddled so they started walking away from us as we got close. Well, Lulu, our Australian Shepherd mix, was chomping at the bit to get out and chase those cows. At first Kevin was worried that the cows would hurt Lulu, but there were no bulls there so his curiosity got the better of him. He pulled over the RV on the side of the road and let Lulu loose! You should have seen her fly! She is a herding dog, after all! We didn't let her get too close to the cows-we'd call her back when she started getting too near them. Kevin went to pull the RV up since we had been walking ahead on the road (this was a pretty deserted road) and Lulu went after the cows again but it took a few calls to get her back that time and the kids got upset! Carson and Lily were in tears because they were so worried Lulu was going to get hurt. When she did come back, Carson told her to get on the RV--he was so mad at her because she didn't listen to us. It was very sweet and just shows you what a true part of our family she really is.
Besides the kids getting upset, Kevin loved watching her chase those cows! He said it was the favorite part of his birthday! Today, we are staying in Williams, AZ and driving to the Grand Canyon. We'll probably head out in the morning tomorrow and head to Vegas, baby! I've never been so I can't wait to see the lights and take it all in!
